Garrett Hedlund (born September 3, 1984) is an American actor and model. Some of his films include Friday Night Lights (2004), Troy (2004), Four Brothers (2005), Eragon (2006), Country Strong (2010), Tron: Legacy (2010), On the Road (2012), Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), Unbroken (2014), Pan (2015) and Mudbound (2017).

Early life

Hedlund was born in Roseau, Minnesota, to Kristine Anne (née Yanish) and Robert Martin Hedlund. He is the youngest of three children, with a brother, Nathaniel, and a sister, Amanda. His father was of Swedish descent and his mother is of German and Norwegian descent. Garrett was raised on a remote beef cattle farm near the small town of Wannaska, Minnesota. In the tenth grade, he moved to live with his mother in Arizona, where he saved his tips from working as a waiter to pay for lessons with acting coach Jean Fowler, with whom he worked on speeches and script material.

Career

As a teenager, Hedlund modelled for L.L. Bean and Teen magazine. In 2003, at the age of eighteen, Hedlund moved to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career.

Hedlund made his feature film debut with Brad Pitt as Patroclus in the mythological epic adventure war drama Troy. The film was released on May 14, 2004. He also co-starred with Billy Bob Thornton, Connie Britton and Tim McGraw as Don Billingsley in the 2004 sports drama Friday Night Lights, where McGraw played his abusive father.

He co-starred with Mark Wahlberg in the crime drama Four Brothers as Jack Mercer. He co-starred with Ed Speleers, Jeremy Irons and Sienna Guillory in the fantasy-adventure film Eragon as Murtagh.

In 2007, he co-starred with Lindsay Lohan, Jane Fonda and Felicity Huffman in the comedy-drama Georgia Rule, directed by Garry Marshall. The film was released May 11, 2007, was panned by critics and failed to surpass box office expectations, only making a lifetime gross of $41 million. That same year, he co-starred with Kevin Bacon in the crime thriller Death Sentence. In 2010, he co-starred with Jeff Bridges in the science fiction/action film Tron: Legacy, a sequel to the 1982 film Tron. The film was released on December 17, 2010.

Garrett also co-starred with Gwyneth Paltrow, Leighton Meester and his Friday Night Lights co-star, country musician Tim McGraw in the musical drama Country Strong, which was released on December 22, 2010. He recorded a number of songs for the film including “Chances Are” which appeared on Country Strong: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. His performance was well-received by critics; noting voice similarities between him and Charlie Robison, Roughstock said “the best song on this album belongs to him” and Country Weekly wrote that of all the songs performed by actors in this film, his was “the most convincing”. Six other songs including a duet with Meester were featured on a second soundtrack titled Country Strong: More Music from the Motion Picture.

He co-starred with Kristen Stewart, Amy Adams, Steve Buscemi, Terrence Howard, Kirsten Dunst and Viggo Mortensen as Dean Moriarty in the 2012 adventure drama On the Road. The film was directed by Walter Salles and based on Jack Kerouac‘s novel of same name.

Inside Llewyn Davis was released in 2013 and marked Garrett’s first collaboration with Oscar Isaac and second with John Goodman. The film was directed by the Coen Brothers, and also starred Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake and Adam Driver. The film was nominated for many awards, including three Golden Globes, three BAFTA’s, and two Academy Awards. Ethan and Joel won the Grand Prize of the Jury at Cannes 2013, and it also won AFI’s Movie of the Year award. In 2013, Garrett also starred in the music video of Kings of Leon’s Beautiful War.

In 2014, Garrett co-starred with Jack O’Connell and Domhnall Gleeson in the historical drama Unbroken directed by Angelina Jolie. The film details the incredible true story of Louis Zamperini, and was nominated for three Academy Awards and won the AFI Movie of the Year 2014. He also starred in Lullaby, directed by Andrew Levitas, and with Richard Jenkins, Anne Archer, Jessican Brown Findlay and Amy Adams, where he also recorded another song “Fall Apart” which he can be seen performing at the end of the film.

2015 saw the release of Mojave, directed by William Monahan and Garrett’s second collaboration with both Oscar Isaac and Mark Wahlberg. He also wrote and performed the song “Can’t Help it”. This years also brought the highly anticipated Pan film, directed by Joe Wright and starring Hugh Jackman, Levi Miller and Rooney Mara.

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk was released on November 18th 2016, directed by Ang Lee, it was the first film to be shot using a 120 frame rate. It also starred Vin Diesel, Joe Alwyn, Steve Martin, Chris Tucker and Kristen Stewart. That year, Garrett also filmed Burden, which has yet to be widely released, despite winning the Audience Award in the Dramatic category at Sundance in 2018.

In 2017, Garrett was very busy promoting Mudbound, which was finally released by Netflix on November 17th. The film was directed by Dee Rees and starred Carey Mulligan, Jonathan Banks, Jason Clarke, Jason Mitchell, Mary. J Blige and Rob Morgan. Winning a host of awards, it was also nominated for four Academy Awards, including two for Mary. J Blige – the first African American woman to receive multiple nominations in the same year, as well as the first person to be nominated in both the music and acting categories in the same year. Cinematographer Rachel Morrison became the first woman to ever be nominated for Best Cinematography, and Dee Rees became the first African American woman to be nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.

In 2018, Garrett co-starred with Sharon Stone as an aspiring artist in Steven Soderbergh‘s HBO murder mystery drama series Mosaic, an six part whodunit based on the murder of a popular children’s book author. It was released orginally in late 2017 as an interactive app designed to let users expierence different portions of the story from the perspective of different characters in a non-linear fashion, before being televsised by HBO.

Garrett also filmed the long awaited Triple Frontier, with Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Pedro Pascal and Charlie Hunnam, directed by J. C. Chandor. This will be released by Netflix on March 13th 2019.

2018 also saw the release of Tocsin, a short film that Garrett not only starred in but also produced with Frank E. Flowers, as well as another music video, this time directed by Jeff Nichols for Lucero, Long Way Back Home, starring Michael Shannon and Scoot McNairy.

Late 2018, filming completed in Australia on Dirt Music, directed by Gregor Jordan and starring Kelly Macdonald, based on the book by Tim Winton.
